Whether it’s diet, beauty, or personal health, Vitamin C is an essential vitamin for humans. What started off as a scurvy preventative, Vitamin C has risen to the highest levels in the world of wellness. Now, we know Vitamin C to be much more than an old pirate cure-all.

Research shows that the consistent use of Vitamin C keeps the immune system stable. The immune system is strongly influenced by the intake of nutrients. This is important, as the regular consumption of Vitamin C can prevent illnesses and/or work to shorten cold durations. Several cells of the immune system can accumulate Vitamin C and need the vitamin to perform their task, especially phagocytes and t-cells. Phagocytes protect the body by ingesting harmful foreign particles, bacteria, and dead or dying cells. T-cells are a type of white blood cell that is an essential part of the immune system. Vitamin C essentially helps these superhero cells do their jobs efficiently. Including a balanced amount of supplemental Vitamin C along with a diet rich in the vitamin has been proven to support the immune system over time and prevents the spread of sickness, viruses, and disease.

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in some foods. This potent antioxidant fights free radicals that can cause inflammation and cellular damage. Free radicals are unstable atoms that can damage cells and cause illness and aging. Vitamin C is also known to reduce the risk of chronic diseases like high blood pressure and macular degeneration. Also, as suggested above, antioxidants like Vitamin C have many beauty benefits, including help to protect skin and prevent signs of aging.

Unlike most animals, humans cannot produce Vitamin C naturally. Because of this, we must get it in the fruits and vegetables we consume, or by ingesting dietary supplements like vitamins. Some foods are exceptionally high in Vitamin C, including: citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits, pomegranates, and tropical fruits like mangoes, papayas, and pineapples. Certain vegetables can also have high amounts of Vitamin C, such as broccoli, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts.

According to the National Institutes of Health, the average American is not getting the recommended amount of Vitamin C they should be consuming daily. The recommended daily dosage for adult men is 90 mg and adult women is 75 mg.
