Thailand’s renown as a bucket list travel destination for people wanderlust of heart is well placed and well earned. The lush landscape and natural beauty ignite tourists’ fantasies and outdoors, adventurous spirits. Thailand’s economy was not always fueled by tourism, though. Not so long ago, Thailand’s economy was agriculturally based, and one of the country’s cash crops was Kratom.
The Kingdom of Thailand, formerly known as Siam, is a country located at the Indochinese peninsula center. Thailand has over 66 million people and 76 provinces on a mere 198,120 square miles of land. This ultimate travel destination is known for its tropical beaches and rainforests filled with exotic creatures.
Thailand is also known for its opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins, and ornate temples displaying Buddha figures. In Bangkok, the capital and modern cityscape rise next to sleepy canalside communities, Wat Arun, Wat Pho, and the Emerald Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Kaew). Nearby beach resorts include busy Pattaya and fashionable Hua Hin.
Today, many tourists enjoy Thailand’s climate flocking to its sandy shores and dense forests. The tropical island’s humid, subtropical terrain is not only conducive to beautiful beaches, views, and photo opportunities; it is a prime ecosystem for our favorite plant Kratom.
When growing Kratom, there are three fundamental factors to keep in mind. These factors are heat, humidity, and soil pH. Heat is easy. It’s the perfect moisture level and the precise chemical composition of the soil that is tricky to get anywhere outside Kratom’s native Thailand and the surrounding countryside. “Perfect” pH levels for Kratom means a pH range between 5.5 and 6.5, high humus levels, and exceptional fertility. Alongside pH levels, Kratom’s strict soil requirements also demand a perfect balance of porosity and solidity to drain and retain moisture.
In Southeast Asia, monsoon rains and the hot, humid rainforest-like climate maintain this delicate moisture and chemical balance.
Kratom has grown wild in Thailand for hundreds of years. In the early 1900s, Thai people began cultivating Kratom for human consumption. These growers successfully developed the plant until the Thai government passed the Kratom Act of 1943. This law made it illegal to grow Kratom trees.
Because the trees are native to Thailand, there was no way to prevent Kratom from growing wildly. This did not prevent the government from rendering the use of the leaves illegal.
Recently, Thailand’s backward ban on Kratom was lifted. In December 2018, Thailand’s National Legislative Assembly passed the country’s new Kratom laws with a unanimous vote of 166-0. Now, Kratom can once again be enjoyed in its homeland of Thailand.
